Top 5 Gold Stocks For 2014

In recent months, officials with the Bank of Canada (BoC) have repeatedly asserted that Canada’s economy is poised to shift from slackening domestic demand to an increase in exports and a corresponding rise in business investment. And based on the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) latest “World Economic Outlook,” the Washington, D.C.-based fund appears to be in agreement.

The main hitch, however, is that because the US is Canada’s largest trading partner, much of this economic transition is predicated on a strengthening US economy. Given the fact that the US is in the midst of a government shutdown, and that both political parties are digging in for a protracted budget negotiation, it appears increasingly likely that the shutdown could extend far longer than initially expected.

As we noted last week, for instance, economists at Goldman Sachs project that a shutdown that lasts as long as a month could pare as much as half a point from growth in fourth-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) for the US. Meanwhile, most of the forecasts we’ve seen show the Canadian economy generally taking a hit that’s roughly half the magnitude of the one the US could suffer.

Top 5 Quality Companies To Invest In Right Now: Golden Star Resources Ltd(GSS)

Golden Star Resources Ltd., a gold mining and exploration company, through its subsidiaries, engages in the acquisition, exploration, development, and production of gold properties. It owns and operates the Bogoso/Prestea gold mining and processing operation that covers approximately 40 kilometers of strike along the southwest-trending Ashanti gold district in western Ghana; and the Wassa open-pit gold mine located to the east of Bogoso/Prestea in southwest Ghana. The company also has an 81% interest in the Prestea underground gold mine located in Ghana. In addition, it holds interests in various gold exploration projects in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Cote d?Ivoire, as well as holds and manages exploration properties in Brazil in South America. The company was founded in 1984 and is based in Littleton, Colorado.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Patricio Kehoe] some future and gave several reasons for my bearish stance towards the stock. A small market, high geopolitical risk in some of the countries the firm operates, along with overexpansion in times of fluctuating gold prices gave tune to the massive shedding of shares by investment gurus. Five months have past since I last considered Golden Star potential, and everything indicates the situation has not changed.

Guru Activity Shows a Clear Tendency

Steven Cohen (Trades, Portfolio), Chuck Royce (Trades, Portfolio) and Arnold Schneider (Trades, Portfolio), had already sold their entire holdings in the company by October 2013, indicating they had little faith in the gold miner recovery. By the end of the year, Jim Simons' (Trades, Portfolio) Renaissance Technologies took a similar decision, reducing its stake in the firm by 32%. This tendency towards the sale of Golden Star stock was duly noted by investors and analysts alike, and concurs with the company poor performance.

    A Look at the Numbers

In an industry plagued by fluctuating metal prices, operating with lofty margins can be quite helpful. Yet Golden Star cannot afford such luxuries. With an operating margin of 0.1% and a net margin of -56.8% the firm is in a tight spot, especially when compared to the industry average. Unlike its industry peersmedian, which are of 2.26% and -0.09%, respectively, the Toronto-based gold miner is struggling to generate decent cash flow levels. Further metrics depict a even worse situation for shareholders: return on equity is currently at -370% and revenue growth is estimated to reach a poor 2.5%. Purchasing overpriced assets, relative to current gold prices, is surely one of the reasons for such grim figures, as financial losses have taken their toll on Golden Star.

The announcement of its 2013 full year, and fourth quarter earnings only helped to add to shareholdersconcerns. A 15% decline in revenue was expected by those

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] ating price of the commodity, along with the geopolitical risks involved in mining in African nations such as Ghana, are just two of the obstacles the firm is facing. In addition, as one of the smallest gold mining firms in the industry, with a market cap of just $122 million, Golden Star has had a very difficult time financing its latest expansion projects. With share prices tumbling towards all-time lows, gurus such as Steven Cohen, Chuck Royce and Arnold Schneider have already sold out their positions in the troubled firm.

Why Have Gurus Lost Faith in Golden Star?

Despite aggressive expansion over the past decade, the Toronto-based gold mining firm has not been able to take advantage of its increased production output. Gold prices might have exploded over a ten-year period, yet the recent six-month decline has put a huge strain on Golden Star. The expedited maturation of its mines is particularly troubling, since the accelerated extraction rates, which allowed for short-term profits, are now falling considerably. The impact of the company excessive overproduction on profits and growth is clear: decreasing gold reserves mean less production, and thus reduced revenue for the gold miner. When the decline in metal prices are taken into account, the outlook is even more grim.

In addition to overexpansion at the wrong time, Golden Star position has weakened due to its comparably less efficient operations. Unlike industry peers, such as IamGold Corp. (IAG) or Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI), the majority of the Toronto-based miner assets contain refractory ore, which is far more expensive to extract than non refractory ore. And, in an attempt to switch production to the lower cost gold ore, and thus increase margins, Golden Star has depleted its minesnon refractory ore. With low reserves and mounting cash costs, the firm inevitably turned to new acquisitions.

    Overpriced Acquisitions and Geopolitical Risk

Baidu continues to lose PC market share
In China, Baidu is the leader of Internet search with a 54.5% share of the market in PCs, according to Chinese statistics site CNZZ. While good, Baidu's share has shrunk from a high of nearly 80% in late 2012 and 67.7% last year. The beneficiaries of Baidu's loss are Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU  ) and Sohu (NASDAQ: SOHU  ) .

Sohu.com (SOHU) is a Chinese online media, search, gaming, community and mobile service group. This stock closed up 7.5% to $69.61 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 4.90 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 1.01 million

    Volume % Change: 351%

From a technical perspective, SOHU ripped sharply higher here with heavy upside volume. This move pushed shares of SOHU into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $67.80. Shares of SOHU are now quickly moving within range of triggering another breakout trade. That trade will hit if SOHU manages to take out Monday's high of $69.71 to its 52-week high at $70.63 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SOHU as long as it's trending above Monday's low of $66.95 or above that first breakout level of $67.80 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 1.01 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SOHU will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $75 to $80.

Risk from Madoff scam remains at JPMorgan

The nation's largest bank isn't out of financial jeopardy for its business link to the Bernard Madoff fraud scandal.

The court-appointed trustee trying to recover billions Madoff stole in the now-infamous Ponzi scheme petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court this month, asking it to issue the final word on whether JPMorgan Chase should pay for taking little action on suspicious activity in the account Madoff held at the bank.

The petition also argues that Swiss banking giant UBS, global bank HSBC and other financial institutions should share legal liability with JPMorgan for failing to stop the fraud.

"Madoff did not sustain this unprecedented fraud for more than two decades by himself," David Rivkin, the counsel for trustee Irving Picard, wrote in the Oct. 9 petition. "Instead, he was aided by a network of financial institutions, feeder funds and individuals who funneled investments" into Madoff's firm, provided financial services "and (of course) skimmed off substantial amounts for their efforts."

The petition asks the Supreme Court to review a federal appeals court decision in June that upheld lower court rulings that barred the trustee from pursuing financial recovery from the financial institutions. The lower courts ruled the federal law that empowers the trustee limits him to customer claims against Madoff's now-insolvent business.

The high court set a Dec. 9 deadline for the banks and feeder funds to file legal responses. They have repeatedly said they acted in good faith and could not have detected or stopped Madoff's scheme.

Formally known as a writ of certiorari, the petition represents a legal long shot. The Supreme Court agrees to accept only a fraction of the thousands of cases submitted for review. But Picard's petition argues that several federal appeals courts around the nation have issued differing rulings on similar matters. The Supreme Court sometimes reviews such cases to resolve legal discrepancies.

David Sheehan, Picard's chief counsel, maintained ! the trustee has legal authority "to pursue compensation from any third party that collaborates with a broker to defraud its customers."

JPMorgan "was foremost among (financial institution) collaborators, standing at the very center of Madoff's fraud for over 20 years," Picard's petition argues.

Billions of dollars flowed through Madoff's retail checking account at the New York-based bank "in suspicious and repetitive round-trip transactions." Madoff was assumed to be making investments on behalf of thousands of mom-and-pop clients, celebrities, charities and financial institutions, and the account funds weren't "segregated in any fashion," the petition argued.

According to the trustee's petition, JPMorgan's chief risk officer, John Hogan, warned colleagues about 18 months before the fraud collapsed that "there is a well-known cloud over the head of Madoff and that his returns are speculated to be part of a Ponzi scheme." But the bank response was to assign a junior employee "to see what a Google search could turn up about Madoff," the petition argues.

Despite its suspicions, JPMorgan ultimately invested with several feeder funds that funneled money to Madoff. But unlike thousands of other investors, JPMorgan Chase redeemed more than $276 million before the scheme crumbled. At that time, the bank sent a suspicious activity report about Madoff to the United Kingdom's Serious Organized Crime Agency.

"But these revelations came too late to do anyone, save JPM, any good," the petition argued.

Madoff confessed to the fraud in December 2008 and pleaded guilty the following year without standing trial. He's now serving a 150-year federal prison term. Accountants and other experts assisting Picard determined that the scam ran up nearly $20 billion in losses. Five former Madoff employees are currently on trial in New York on charges they were knowing participants in the scheme.

JPMorgan could also face criminal liability for its long financial relationship with Madoff. Th! e New Yor! k Times reported Thursday that federal authorities and the bank have discussed a deferred prosecution agreement in which the bank would pay a financial fine and make acknowledgments concerning its Madoff-related activity.

The Times account, which cited information from people briefed on the inquiry, reported that JPMorgan could also be required to hire an independent monitor.

The Manhattan U.S. Attorney's office declined to comment. JPMorgan spokesman Joe Evangelisti reiterated previous statements that all personnel "acted in good faith" with regard to Madoff's banking.

Separately, JPMorgan is negotiating a potential record-setting $13 billion settlement to address the role the bank and its subsidiaries played in marketing mortgage-backed securities during the run-up to the 2008 financial collapse. The tentative agreement is expected to include a mixture of fines and consumer relief.

The Sweet Smell of Decay

Print FriendlyWhile the MLP space is dominated by the oil and gas sector, in last week’s article we began to explore some of the more exotic master limited partnership offerings. This week we continue our exploration of nontraditional MLPs by looking at the partnerships supplying fertilizer.

Rentech (Nasdaq: RTK) has been around for more than a decade, and it has shifted strategies several times. Full disclosure: Rentech’s Chief Technology Officer Harold Wright is a former manager of mine when we were both at ConocoPhillips, and I have visited Rentech’s facility in Commerce City, Colorado.

For most of Rentech’s existence, the company has sought to commercialize alternative fuels. At one time it had ambitions to build a large coal-to-liquids (CTL) plant, but federal legislation ultimately nudged it instead into the biomass-to-liquids (BTL) space. The company did build a BTL demonstration plant, but ultimately shut it down and has now refocused its efforts on becoming “one of the largest wood processing companies in the world.”

During its interesting journey as a company, Rentech acquired two ammonia nitrogen fertilizer facilities, which turned out to be a profit center that funded the alternative energy research. In November 2011, Rentech spun off this fertilizer business into an MLP called Rentech Nitrogen Partners LP (NYSE: RNF).

In the months leading to the spin-off, RTK’s market capitalization was about $200 million. Rentech maintained 60 percent ownership of RNF, and three months after the spin-off RTK’s market cap had risen to $400 million, while investors had bid RNF up to $1 billion. Interestingly, RTK’s share of RNF was worth more than RTK’s entire market cap, a situation that persists. The market currently values Rentech at $482 million, while the valuation of Rentech Nitrogen Partners makes RTK’s 60 percent stake in RNF worth slightly ! more than $600 million — another illustration of the premium investors have been willing to pay for MLPs.

RNF owns two fertilizer production facilities, one in East Dubuque, Illinois and the other in Pasadena, Texas. The partnership is a pure play on nitrogen fertilizer, which is produced from natural gas and which is therefore subject to natural gas price volatility. The Illinois plant is in the heart of the Corn Belt, and as a result will also be subject to corn price volatility (i.e., high corn prices will mean higher fertilizer demand, and vice versa). Modifications to the Renewable Fuel Standard, which supports corn prices by encouraging the production of ethanol, could significantly affect demand for nitrogen fertilizer.

RNF had a solid 2012 when natural gas prices were lower, but the recovery of natural gas prices this year has eaten into margins. This, as well as some unscheduled outages led RNF to recently reduce its 2013 distribution guidance to $2.05-2.20 per unit from $2.60 previously. The partnership already paid out $0.50 in Q1 2013 and $0.85 in Q2, which leaves $0.70 to $0.85 to be paid for the rest of 2013. At the current price, this implies an annualized yield for the final two quarters between 5.3 percent and 6.4 percent. But fertilizer is a seasonal business, and including the two distributions already paid for 2013 bumps the 2013 yield to roughly 8 percent.

Rentech has two competitors in this space. Terra Nitrogen Company LP (NYSE: TNH) owns and operates a nitrogen fertilizer plant in Oklahoma. The general partner is a wholly owned subsidiary of CF Industries Holdings (NYSE: CF), the second largest nitrogen fertilizer producer in the world.

5 Best Wireless Telecom Stocks To Buy Right Now

Terra Nitrogen’s claim to fame is the extraordinary performance of units. Over the last 10 years, the price rose from approximately $5 to the current level above $200. Like RNF, Terra Nitrogen profits from historically low natural gas prices. Thus its most recent distribution, equivalent to 7.9 percent on an annualized basis, might be reduced if the cost of its main input rose dramatically.

One other risk factor for US-based fertilizer manufacturers is the threat of cheap Chinese exports. China produces fertilizer predominantly from coal instead of natural gas, and with natural gas prices increasing in the US and global coal prices declining, Chinese fertilizer has become much more competitive.

Enter CVR Partners LP (NYSE: UAN), the only company in the US to produce fertilizer from petroleum coke (petcoke). Petcoke is a byproduct of petroleum refining, and prices are usually set off coal prices, since these two products compete in the same niche. Thus the same dynamics that currently threaten the distributions of Rentech Nitrogen Partners and Terra Nitrogen Company play in CVR Partners’ favor.

CVR Partners’ fertilizer plant is located in Coffeyville, Kansas, adjacent to the refinery owned by CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR). CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), majority-owned by Carl Icahn via Icahn Enterprises (NYSE: IEP), is the general partner and owns most of the units for both CVR Partners and CVR Refining.

CVR Partners’ results are up across the board in 2013. Sales rose 6.6 percent in the first half compared with the first half of 2012, while EBITDA was up 10 percent, and distributable cash flow was up 6.3 percent. But unit prices have been weak, registering a decline of 25 percent year-to-date. This has pushed the yield of CVR Partners up to the range of 9.8 percent to 10.9 percent based on the most recent guidance.

Investing in fertilizer MLPs is not for everyone. There are special risks that must be recognized, and that won’t be acceptable to the more conservative income investors. But a growing global population means growing fertilizer demand, and patient investors who are selective with their entry points may find this sector to be richly rewarding.

Indeed, most private companies have followed the strategy of protecting current pensioners while removing benefits from future workers. Over the past several years, IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) , Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) , and countless other major employers have frozen existing pension plans, keeping them in place for employees that already earned benefits from them. New hires, however, were shunted into 401(k) plans and similar defined-contribution plans, which carry far less risk for the employer.

Earnings season isn't close to over, but we've already seen a huge number of stocks in the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) report their first-quarter results. So far, we've seen more companies do better than expected than do worse, but given the extent to which analysts lowered the earnings bar in the run-up to the beginning of earnings season, investors aren't entirely confident about whether the overall performance of corporate America is strong enough to keep the bull market in stocks roaring for a sixth straight year. This week, Dow components Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) , ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) , and Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) will add their results to the mix, and what they say about some of the most challenging sectors of the U.S. economy right now could help determine which direction the Dow moves in the weeks and months to come.

    AnalystsConsensus Position on Pfizer

Thirteen analysts including those at TheStreet, Thomson Reuters/Verus, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Barclays Capital, Morgan Stanley and Argus Research are optimistic about the performance of Pfizer going forward and, hence, reiterated a consensus buy recommendation at an average target price of $31.78 per share. Last Wednesday, analysts at Goldman Sachs removed Pfizer from Goldman conviction buy list (CL) where Pfizer has been since Aug. 9, 2011, and placed it on the buy list but raised its price target from $34 to $35 per share. Jami Rubin, an analyst with Goldman Sachs, claimed that Pfizer has gone up by 82.5% since being added to the CL as against 53.9% for the S&P 500 during the period and, therefore, there was the need to replace Pfizer with AbbVie at a price target of $60 because they claimed AbbVie has greater upside at this time.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As the world's second largest tobacco company, Philip Morris International (PM) is the prototypical sin stock. It boasts recognizable brands, a sticky customer base, and a hefty dividend payout -- and the payout looks due for a dividend hike. As I write, Philip Morris International currently pays out a 85 cents each quarter, adding up to a 4.05% yield.

Philip Morris owns almost 30% of the world's tobacco market. And much of that success is thanks to a single iconic brand: Marlboro. The firm has owned Marlboro (as well as second-tier names such as L&M and Parliament) internationally ever since Altria (MO) split up its international and domestic operations. Between the two markets, PM owns the more attractive franchise by far. After all, the international market is the only one that's actually growing.

While the U.S. market for tobacco products is rife with regulation and demographic shifts are turning away from smoking, international tobacco sales are up -- especially in emerging markets. Premium positioning in markets like India, China and Indonesia translates into substantial cash flows for PM investors. And while the strength of the dollar has been a challenge post-2008, the potential for a Fed taper could strengthen this stock's payout in 2013.

It franchises and operates McDonald?s restaurants that offer various food items, soft drinks, coffee, and other beverages. McDonald (NYSE: MCD), the world largest retail food chain, revealed this week that it plans to return $18 billion to $20 billion to shareholders between 2014 and 2016 through a combination of dividends and share repurchases. It yet another sign that this company, which virtually invented the fast food concept, is still staying ahead of the competition.

Since bottoming out below $15 in January of 2003, the share price recently crested above $100 again, and now has a market cap of $100 billion. Yet it still trades at a price-earnings ratio of 18, about the same as the market (actually, a slight discount to the market) and pays a dividend yield of more than 3 percent. If you didn know it was a restaurant and just looked at the financial stats, you might mistake it for a tech stock.

McDonald has long been the leader in providing tasty food to people in a hurry. As Americanstastes have shifted toward healthier fare in recent years, some analysts questioned McDonald’s ability to keep up with the times. But by expanding its menu with more salads and other healthy options, and adjusting its marketing accordingly, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company has kept pace with the times.

The proof is in the numbers. The corporation recently announced that global comparable sales increased 1.2% in April over the same month in 2013. Even in a market with more fast food choices than ever, McDonald has found a way to increase revenue.

The global reach of the company is a key factor here. Comparable sales were actually flat in the United States during April not all that surprising considering the state of the economy (the government just reported that the U.S. economy actually contracted by 1 percent in the first quarter of 2014) and eating out is always one of first things consumers cut back on.

So why did revenues increase overall? Because sales in the Pacific region, the Middle East and Africa were up 2.9 per

Management sees tough times ahead in the second half of 2013 but also reminds investors that the company has "succeeded in a variety of operating and economic environments." Hot Healthcare Equipment Companies To Own For 2014

Increased oil production in the U.S. is leading to fewer oil imports from OPEC nations. That's beginning to concern the organization, which is conducting a review of North American production to determine its potential impact. Several U.S.-based companies are leading the charge to kill OPEC's stranglehold of the global oil market. Following are just five of the companies that have seen a dramatic jump in oil production in 2012 over 2011 levels.

1.Kodiak Oil & Gas (NYSE: KOG  )
Few companies are growing oil production as fast as Kodiak Oil & Gas. Last year, the Bakken driller grew its oil production a staggering 250% as its total oil sales volume went from 1.34 million barrels in 2011 up to 4.7 million barrels last year. This surge was fueled by the $1.5 billion in capital the company spent on both drilling and acquisitions. Kodiak looks to spend about the same amount this year, as its capital plans call for $740 million to drill 75 wells, while Kodiak alsorecently announced that it was spending$660 million to acquire additional acreage and production in the play.

Regardless, the Chymiaks still control 47% of the company. Ken Chymiak is now chairman. And David Chymiak is still a director and now the company chief technology officer. Clearly, it still their company.

By the way, the name ADDvantage Technologies has nothing to do with the Chymiaks. Today AEY really traces its roots to a private company called Tulsat. The Chymiak brothers acquired that company about 27 years ago. So, effectively, when you buy shares of AEY you are buying into a 27-year-old family-controlled company.

That pretty typical in the world of net-nets.

    Solitron

Solitron Devices is 29% owned by Shevach Saraf. He has been the CEO for 20 years. The post-bankruptcy Solitron has never known another CEO. Before the bankruptcy, Solitron was a much bigger, much different company. So even though we are not talking about the founder here and even though 70% of the company shares are not held by the CEO wee still talking about a company where one person has a lot of control. Solitron only has three directors. Saraf is the chairman, CEO, president, CFO and treasurer. Neither of the other two directors joined the board within the last 15 years. So, we aren talking about a lot of tumult at the top.

In fact, profitable net-nets seem to be especially common candidates for abandoning the responsibilities of a public company without actually getting taken private.
