Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Dendreon (NASDAQ: DNDN  ) �-- developer of the Food and Drug Administration-approved immunotherapy treatment Provenge to treat castration-resistant prostate cancer -- sank like a stone, losing as much as 17% after reporting disappointing first-quarter results.

So what: For the quarter, revenue for Provenge actually fell 18% year-over-year to $67.6 million despite the company's aggressive advertising campaign, missing the Street's estimates of $80 million in sales. Net loss clocked in at $0.48 per share, which was right in line with estimates. Dendreon's CEO, John Johnson, blamed the revenue shortfall on his company's difficulty in gaining insurance approval for the pricey treatment, and increased competition, which included Medivation's�Xtandi getting a recommendation for approval to treat advanced prostate cancer from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use in Europe last month. Dendreon's remaining cash balance fell to $337.3 million.

    We're seeing the same exact price setup in shares of mid-cap insurance broker Arthur J. Gallagher (AJG) -- just in the shorter-term. AJG has been forming an ascending triangle setup of its own since the beginning of May, hitting its head on resistance at $45.50. That's the breakout level to watch in shares this week.

    Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in this stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

    That resistance line at $45.50 is a price where there's an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to take recent gains and sell their shares than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes the move above it so significant -- a breakout indicates that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level. Wait for that signal to happen before you jump into this stock.

    Catastrophically speaking, property and casualty insurer Allstate (NYSE: ALL  ) had an easier time of it in the first quarter of 2013 than it did in the year-ago period. It recorded only nine catastrophic events at an estimated cost of $391 million in the first three months of this year,�the company announced today, as opposed to 15 events�at an estimated cost of $420 million in the Q1 numbers it reported last March.

    Insurance operating income jumped 28% compared to 2012, while investment income was relatively flat. The company has been working on both its underwriting practices and risk selection. And though the flat nature of its investment income may seem disappointing, all of the players in the insurance market have been dealing with pressure from the low interest rates. So the investment income generated by AIG is sign of strength in a difficult environment, with both positive returns from higher securities values and alternative investments. Competitor Allstate (NYSE: ALL  ) noted in its earnings report Wednesday that it was moving into more cash-generating investments that would ultimately lead to lower investment income in the future. AIG hasn't made the same move, and may end up benefiting from the decision to hold firm.

The Company's CARExpress Plus programs are membership programs consists of the Company's CARExpress health discount progr! ams and limited liability insurance benefits underwritten by United States.The limited liability insurance benefits included in these programs are accidental death and dismemberment coverage (AD&D), accident medical expense coverage (AME), accident disability coverage, a daily hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) benefit, doctor visit benefits, inpatient/outpatient surgical visit benefits, as well as emergency room and ambulance benefits.
