A well-worn investment strategy to begin the new year is to buy the "dogs of the Dow," that is, those shares that trailed their confreres in the Dow Jones Industrial index. We think International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), the shaggiest member of the pack in 2013, could well check out of the hound hotel this year.
IBM was the sole member of the 30-stock Dow Jones industrials with a negative return in 2013, a year in which the DJIA returned a robust 30%, the best performance since the 1990s. Including dividends, IBM returned a negative 1.50% for the year.
Why the dismal performance in a year that was sterling for the market? After all, earnings were strong, easily beating expectations in the third quarter. Investors, however, focused on how those earnings were derived. Revenue declined, and margins were juiced higher by cost-cutting measures. Sales totaled $23.72 billion in the third quarter, down from $24.75 billion in the year-ago period and below the consensus estimate of $24.78 billion. Earnings per share were $3.99 versus $3.62 in 2012 and four cents ahead of the consensus estimate.

Combine that with an ever-so-slightly lower 10-year yield and you have a recipe for a housing rally. Hovnanian has gained 2.8% to $5.18, but that was nothing compared to other gainers today. PulteGroup (PHM) has jumped 8.1% to $16.73, MDC Holdings (MDC) has risen 7% to $29.59, D.R. Horton (DHI) has climbed 6.6% to $19.30 and the Ryland Group (RYL) is up 5.9% at $37.98.

This isn't surprising. The supply of existing homes for sale is at a seven-year low. Construction of new homes is still well below the rate of household formation. Prices will almost always rise in that situation. It's simple supply and demand. And it's pulled millions of homeowners out from being underwater on their mortgage and brought new hope to the housing industry, boosting shares of D.R. Horton (NYSE: DHI ) and NVR (NYSE: NVR ) as the outlook for construction rises.

Speaking of homebuilders, PulteGroup (NYSE: PHM ) and rival D.R. Horton (NYSE: DHI ) aren't getting any love this morning either, down about 9% and 7%, respectively. Though the sale of new homes in June rose more than 8% from May, signaling a huge jump in buyer demand, the inventory of new homes is nearly half of what economists would view as a good balance between supply and demand. Though the recent data indicates demand for new homes, the two companies are seeing red this morning due to quarterly results. Pulte missed earnings expectations and reported a 12% drop in new booked homes for the second quarter. Horton, on the other hand, reported better-than-expected earnings after it sold homes at higher prices -- but that failed to impress investors.

We're seeing the same exact price setup in shares of mid-cap insurance broker Arthur J. Gallagher (AJG) -- just in the shorter-term. AJG has been forming an ascending triangle setup of its own since the beginning of May, hitting its head on resistance at $45.50. That's the breakout level to watch in shares this week.
Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in this stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.
That resistance line at $45.50 is a price where there's an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to take recent gains and sell their shares than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes the move above it so significant -- a breakout indicates that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level. Wait for that signal to happen before you jump into this stock.

Always touchable money is cash. For individuals, there's little reason for it not to be a simple bank account, money market fund, etc. For most investors, you can just let this stock sit in your brokerage account. Many brokers will sweep unused cash into a money market account or other form of savings where it can earn a tiny amount of interest for you while staying totally liquid. One advantage of keeping cash in this form is that you can look at your cash and stock positions on the same (web)page any time you want. So, for example, if you know you want to keep 10% of your portfolio in cash you can see that you have $12,000 in cash as part of your $120,000 brokerage account and that means you are right on target with your liquidity goal.
