Top 5 Value Companies To Own For 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- On July 3, I told you that Tibco Software (TIBX) looked like a great buy. This is even though the company, which is in a heated battle with (among others) Oracle (ORCL) and IBM (IBM), was coming off a fiscal second quarter in which revenue dropped 1% year over year. In that article, I said:

"I still like Tibco's long-term prospects -- even though many others don't. Management deserves credit for the moves that they've made, many of which should create more value for shareholders over time. Accordingly, with long-term revenue growth that should outperform both IBM and Oracle, I value shares of Tibco at $25, or 15% above current value."

Today, given that shares of Tibco are trading only percentages shy of my $25 target, it's time to re-evaluate the company's prospects, especially since Tibco is due to report third-quarter earnings on Thursday.

Not surprisingly, commodity makers and related stocks were the worst performers among the blue chips. Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) fell the most, dropping 3.2%. The earthmoving-equipment company is highly dependent on demand in China, and slowing growth will weigh on the stock. Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) was down 2.2% for a similar reason as it needs a strong construction market and demand for aluminum in China to boost prices for the metal. Alcoa already reported earnings to a tepid response from the market last week, while Caterpillar will report next Monday. Analysts expect EPS of $1.44 on revenue of $13.81. Both figures are significantly down from a year ago.

Two industrial powerhouses on the Dow delivered earnings today. First, Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) shares finished down 2.4% after missing estimates as many had expected. The slowdown in Chinese construction has hurt demand for materials and thus mining equipment, a key component of Caterpillar's business. The world's largest maker of earth-moving equipment said profits fell 43% as EPS came in at $1.45, down from $2.54 a year ago, and worse than estimates at $1.69. Revenue dropped 15.8% to $14.6 billion, below expectations of $15.1 billion. Management promised cost-cutting to cope with the decrease in demand, and cut its full-year EPS outlook from $7 to $6.50.

The big news, however, was the European Central Bank, which announced a number of measures intended to boost Europe’s economy. The ECB cut its deposit rate to minus 0.1%, while offering European banks access to as much as $542 billion if they will just lend more. Oh, and the ECB is trying to figure out how it could launch full-blown, no-holds-barred quantitative easing. It wasn’t enough to cause the euro to fall today, however. Deutsche Bank’s George Saravelos explains why:

Over the last few weeks we have been arguing that to push the euro meaningfully weaker, the ECB would have to surprise to the upside in terms of the quantity, quality and

I do believe as Wal-Mart gets hurt, the dollar stores will do a little better especially Dollar General (DG), but don overlook Dollar Tree (DLTR). Wall Street is worried about Costco (COST) but I believe it will actually outperform expectations. Costco seems to have figured out how to grow much faster than Wal-Mart and still provide affordable health insurance for most employees.

A few of the compelling companies
From my perspective, the message to be taken away from Stuart's presentation is simply that, even in the face of potential U.S. economic distress, a well-structured portfolio will contain at least a modicum of energy of names. For starters I'd look to Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , the world's leading oilfield services company and energy's technology major domo. Given its operations in about 85 countries, a worldwide energy cataclysm would seemingly be required for the big company to face a significant slowdown.

So what is GE to do? The O&G segment is a very fast growing and nicely profitable business that is synergistic with the rest of GE's industrial operations. Yet it is such a small part of the company, its valuation is being diluted by GE's other businesses. A spin-off would surely unlock value. That said, a spun-off O&G company would be a relatively small player compared to a companies like Schlumberger (SLB), with $42 billion in 2012 revenue and a P/E=19.5, and even Haliburton (HAL), with $24.8 billion in 2012 revenue and a P/E=23.6. But both these companies trade at a premium valuation to GE (P/E=17.8) despite GE's higher dividend yield (3.1%).
